Tanzania and Rwanda interlink their cross border payment systems

Experts from Rwanda and Tanzania convened in Zanzibar for a high-level technical meeting to advance the interlinking of Tanzania's Instant Payment System (TIPS) and Rwanda's National Payment Switch (RSwitch). This proof of concept, part of the EAC Cross-Border Payments System Masterplan, builds on a previous meeting in Kigali in November 2025. Meeting chair Nestory Nicholas Maro from the Bank of Tanzania noted that the PoC will assess similarities, differences, and challenges of integration. The week-long meeting is finalizing governance, risk management, and business models to ensure operational resilience and long-term sustainability.
