Chinese Zero Tariff: The Elimination of Tariffs Boosts China-Africa Relations

As of May 1, 2026, China has implemented zero tariffs on imports from 53 African countries, marking an expanded opening of its market. This measure was inaugurated by the arrival of a shipment of apples from South Africa at the Shenzhen port. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce anticipates that this policy will enhance the competitiveness of African products and support small and medium enterprises. The initiative has been welcomed by the African Union, with sectors like pineapple production in Benin and avocado exports from Kenya already benefiting.
