Tension as gunshots erupt near Niger Republic capital's airport

Gunfire erupted Thursday morning near Niamey airport in Niger's capital, months after a major jihadist attack. The first shooting occurred at 6 am at the airport entrance and lasted two hours. In January, Diori Hamani International Airport was attacked by Islamic State in the Sahel. Niger has faced jihadist violence for a decade.

European Parliamentarians block commission from funding Tanzania

The European Parliament adopted a resolution demanding that the European Commission withdraw its 2026 funding proposal of €156 million for Tanzania. The Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi, linked the world energy crisis to the conflict involving the United States, Iran, and Israel. He stated that the Dangote Refinery prevented Nigeria's economy from sliding into crisis by stabilizing fuel prices and providing a strategic advantage. The refinery increased its production capacity to 700,000 barrels per day and now exports to several African and European countries, as well as the United States and Saudi Arabia. Oba Akanbi commended President Tinubu's support and called for greater recognition of Aliko Dangote in Nigeria.
