Power Generation: West Africa’s Largest Biomass Plant Inaugurated in Ayebo

Côte d’Ivoire inaugurated a 46 MW biomass power plant on November 5, 2026, in Ayebo, in the Aboisso commune of the Sud-Comoé region. Described as the largest facility of its kind in West Africa, it runs on agricultural residues, particularly from the oil palm and rubber sectors. Minister of State Nialé Kaba led the ceremony, attended by Energy Minister Mamadou Sangafowa-Coulibaly and other officials. The plant is expected to supply electricity to about 1.7 million people, while its construction and operation have generated around 1,000 direct jobs.

At the Néo Charging station operated by Petro-Ivoire, electricity costs 230 CFA francs per kWh, and a full recharge costs 12,000–14,000 CFA francs depending on the vehicle. In November 2026, the maximum price for unleaded petrol is 905 CFA francs per litre and diesel 725 CFA francs, while filling a conventional vehicle can cost more than 40,000 CFA francs.
