ADC asks Rivers Assembly to explain reversal of vacancy declaration against three pro-Fubara lawmakers

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has asked the Rivers State House of Assembly to explain the legal basis for reversing its decision to declare the seats of Victor Oko-Jumbo, Sokari Goodboy Sokari and Timothy Oruibienimigha vacant; the three lawmakers are allies of Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The Assembly, led by Martin Amaewhule, had reportedly notified the electoral commission INEC to conduct by-elections before rescinding the declaration after receiving apology letters and explanations from the lawmakers. ADC spokesperson Chizy Enyi cited Section 109 of Nigeria’s Constitution and sought clarification on the validity of both decisions, whether INEC was notified of the reversal, and whether political reconciliation involving Fubara and Nyesom Wike influenced the move. He called for the release of proceedings and attendance records and said unresolved constitutional questions should be referred to the appropriate judicial authorities.

Five Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidates in Kano State accuse the Kwankwasiyya Movement of intimidation and of trying to persuade INEC to replace the list submitted by the party’s national leadership for the 2027 elections. In a complaint dated October 17, 2026, they urged the movement to respect an October 14 Federal High Court judgment in Kano, which validated two nominations while cases involving the other three candidates remain pending. The candidates—Abdulmajid Umar, Shaaban Sharada, Ishmael Sani, Ibrahim Bango and Nasir Ahmed—say they met party requirements and allege a protest was organised against them after the ruling. They say the actions undermine the NDC national leadership and the rule of law.
