The UN is considering closing the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals in Arusha after 16 years of operation. Abubacarr Tambadou, the assistant Secretary General, stated that the final decision will be made in June 2026 by the UN Security Council. This closure would mark the end of a 31-year era in the pursuit of justice for the victims of the 1994 Rwandan genocide, which resulted in one million deaths.
