Russian Gas: The EU Spent Nearly €3 Billion in Early 2026 Despite Sanctions

In the first quarter of 2026, the European Union imported 69 shipments of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Russian Yamal LNG project, amounting to approximately €2.88 billion paid to Russia. 97% of the deliveries were directed to the EU, confirming its dependence on Russian gas despite sanctions. The rise in gas prices, reaching nearly €53 per megawatt-hour in March, also contributed to increased Russian export revenues. The EU aims for a gradual reduction of its dependence on Russian energy by 2027.
