World Cup 2026: Abongile Tom aims to make refereeing 'fashionable' on global stage

South African referee Abongile Tom has arrived in North America for his first FIFA World Cup. He quit his job as a police officer to focus on refereeing and aims to modernize the profession. Tom, from Nyanga, Cape Town, is joined by fellow assistant referee Zakhele Siwela. He recently made a young fan's dream come true by visiting his school and presenting him with a refereeing kit.
