World Cup 2026: African nations conclude matchday 1 with 2 wins, 4 draws and 4 losses

The ten African teams at the 2026 World Cup played their first matches between June 11 and 17. Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana won 1-0 against Ecuador and Panama respectively. Morocco, Egypt, DR Congo and Cape Verde earned draws (1-1 for the first three, 0-0 for Cape Verde against Spain). South Africa, Senegal, Algeria and Tunisia lost, with Tunisia suffering the heaviest defeat (5-1 to Sweden).
