Australian Grand Prix called off as rain spoils Phillip Island sendoff

The final Australian MotoGP at Phillip Island was cancelled on Sunday because of heavy rain, disappointing fans gathered for the circuit’s farewell before the race moves to Adelaide next year. Moto2 and Moto3 were cancelled first, and the MotoGP race, delayed by two hours, was called off at 3:40 p.m. because poor visibility prevented the medical helicopter from operating safely. Riders completed a lap behind the safety car to greet the fans. Phillip Island had featured on the world championship calendar for 30 years; Casey Stoner won there six years in a row from 2007 to 2012, while Mick Doohan clinched his fifth world title at the circuit in 1998.
