24 Years After the Joola Shipwreck, Senegal Pays Tribute to Victims

Twenty-four years after the Joola shipwreck that occurred on the night of September 26-27, 2002, off the Gambian coast, Senegal held an official commemoration in Ziguinchor to honor the 1,863 victims. The ceremony, led by Prime Minister Ahmadou Al Aminou Mohamed Lô, included a wreath-laying at Kanténe Cemetery and prayers, with participation from religious and traditional communities. The Ziguinchor memorial museum preserves the memory through objects and survivor testimonies, while families continue to demand justice and recognition for the tragedy.
