US summer travel slumps under rising fares and fuel expenses

During the July 4 holiday weekend, more than 7.3 million people passed through US airport security checkpoints, down 2.3% from last year. About 45% of Americans are opting not to take a holiday this summer due to higher airfare and fuel costs, according to a joint NPR, PBS News, and Marist College poll. Tensions between the US and Iran, with President Trump declaring the ceasefire over, pushed crude oil up 4.84%, likely further increasing airfares, which have already risen 8.2% since February. Despite the expected surge from the FIFA World Cup, the travel season is facing disruptions.
