Motorists Association Urges Govt to Take Over Public Transport Sector

The Motorists Association of Kenya (MAK) has formally called on the government to take full control of Kenya's public transport sector, arguing that the current system dominated by private operators has failed to provide safe and dignified transport. The association cited reckless driving, deafening music, explicit content, and general disorder in matatus. Currently, the private sector controls 90 to 95 percent of road-based public transport, leaving the government with less than 5 percent direct operational stake. Several fatal matatu crashes, including one on June 3, 2026, on Enterprise Road in Nairobi that killed seven people, have reinforced the call for urgent government intervention.
