Maraga arrest thrusts Nairobi park land dispute into spotlight

Kenya's former Chief Justice David Maraga was arrested on Monday during a protest against plans by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to excise 89 acres of Nairobi National Park for a new animal orphanage. Maraga, who is seeking the presidency on the United Green Movement (UGM) ticket, joined hundreds of conservationists and activists. Although the demonstration had been approved by police, plain-clothes officers later arrested several participants. Maraga remains in custody without charges, claiming orders came from senior authorities.
