Drier than usual conditions with warmer than average temperatures expected in the Greater Horn of Africa

The Greater Horn of Africa is expected to experience drier conditions and warmer temperatures, with signs of an impending El Niño. The IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre has released regional climate forecasts for the June to September 2026 rainfall season, indicating a high likelihood of below-normal rainfall across most regions. The highest probabilities of drought are projected for Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Uganda, while some areas may receive enhanced rainfall.
