Brazil: Lula wins a fourth term as Bolsonaro challenges the results

Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won a fourth presidential term in Brazil with 51.8% of the vote, against 48.2% for Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, an advantage of about 4.4 million votes. After finishing behind his rival in the first round, Lula benefited from increased mobilization by the left, while turnout rose as abstention fell from 21% to 19%. Flávio Bolsonaro refused to concede and said he would seek to have the election annulled. The vote was marked by a two-hour extension ordered by the Supreme Court, which Bolsonaro challenged after Lula alleged that buses had been taken off the roads in several cities.
