National Assembly: Prison conditions and judicial infrastructure at the center of Justice Minister’s hearing before the Monitoring and Evaluation Committee

Justice Minister Guillaume Ngefa was questioned on October 20 by the National Assembly’s Monitoring and Evaluation Committee about detention conditions and the functioning of the justice system in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Committee chair and lawmaker Singoma Mwanza called for prison overcrowding to be reduced, aging facilities to be modernized, and the situation of detained women, children, and infants to receive greater attention. Discussions also highlighted the shortage of courts in provinces and remote areas, and the committee plans to submit recommendations to the Assembly’s plenary. The National Assembly intends to monitor investment plans to modernize the prison system and improve access to justice.
