2027 Elections: INEC Uncovers Plot to Kidnap Electoral Staff, Warns Against Partisanship

INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan said the commission had uncovered an alleged plot to threaten, intimidate and kidnap temporary electoral staff, including National Youth Service Corps members, ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election. Intelligence-led operations resulted in the arrest of suspected plot leaders, who have been charged in court through the Department of State Services. Speaking in Lokoja, Amupitan warned that threats against electoral personnel would be prosecuted and that partisan or negligent officers would face sanctions. INEC is strengthening cooperation with security agencies and preparing for an election involving more than 103 million voters and 176,846 polling units.
