N1 City Mall ordered to pay full damages after woman slips on melted ice cream

The Western Cape High Court held N1 City Mall’s owners, managing agent Broll Property Group and cleaning contractor Bidvest Cleaning jointly and severally liable for E Louw’s proven damages. She slipped on a substance that appeared to be melted ice cream in a passageway at the Goodwood mall in Cape Town on May 1, 2014. The court found the cleaning arrangements inadequate for a busy public holiday and overturned a ruling that had assigned Louw 20% of the blame and absolved Bidvest. The amount of compensation has yet to be determined.
