Lagos court sentences 18-year-old over $800 gift card fraud

A Federal High Court in Lagos convicted 18-year-old Hassan Usman Olamilekan of laundering $800 obtained through a gift card scam targeting Gary Brewer, a United States citizen. After Olamilekan pleaded guilty, Justice Dipeolu fined him N200,000 and ordered him to pay N1 million in restitution to the Nigerian government; the court also ordered two phones forfeited. Olamilekan posed on Zangi as an American woman named Julie Leach and persuaded Brewer that he had won a $250 million lottery. He admitted selling the gift cards, converting the proceeds to naira and transferring the money to his grandmother’s OPay account; he will remain in custody until he pays the ordered amounts.

Murder of Franck Ngyke and his wife: 21 years later, ACOFEPE and La Référence Plus call for investigations to be reopened

Twenty-one years after journalist Franck Ngyke Kangundu and his wife, Hélène Mpaka, were murdered, ACOFEPE and the La Référence Plus press group are calling for the investigation to be reopened. The organizations want any potential masterminds identified and prosecuted, and leads raised by national and international investigations examined through an independent, impartial process free from political interference.

DR Congo: Moïse Katumbi’s defense denounces irregularities in proceedings before the Court of Cassation

Moïse Katumbi’s lawyer, Seignior Mazaba wa Bobaka, is challenging the legality of proceedings before the Court of Cassation following a 26 October hearing in cases RP 025/CR and RP 026/CR. He alleges irregularities in the summonses, a failure to verify Katumbi’s address, and that the cases were taken under deliberation without allowing the defense to make submissions. Citing an officially recorded change of residence to Brussels and Article 82 of a 2013 organic law, he says the proceedings could deny Katumbi a right to appeal and has formally requested that the hearings be reopened. The case pits Katumbi against his half-brother Raphaël Katebe Katoto, who has accused him since 2024 of taking property in Haut-Katanga; the court and prosecutors have not commented on the defense’s allegations.
