An inmate died this week at Bulungu prison in Kwilu province because of food and medical care shortages, and more than 90 others are in critical condition, according to local civil society. Me Dirigeant Munzende, president of Bulungu’s civil society group, says inmates have struggled to find food for two weeks and the prison’s health post lacks medicines. The prison reportedly has received no subsidy for nine months, and Munzende is urging the government to intervene urgently to prevent further deaths. Similar conditions have been reported at the Cinquantenaire prison in Bandundu.
