Families brace for a fourth winter of wind, rain and floods in Gaza’s camps

Displaced Palestinians in Gaza are facing a fourth winter without adequate shelter, as coastal winds, rain and temperatures that can fall to 7°C threaten their tents and makeshift homes. Mohammed al-Jamal, 60, is trying to secure his family’s worn-out tent in a displacement camp on Gaza City’s western coast, but cannot afford a replacement tarpaulin costing 120 to 150 shekels. Displaced several times since October 2023, he lives in these conditions with about 30 members of his extended family, whose living space is flooded by rain and whose few belongings are at risk. He says every storm tears apart their repairs, forcing them to start over.
