Trump asks Supreme Court to block 20,000 California ballots before midterms

Donald Trump’s administration asked the Supreme Court on Monday to stop California from counting mail-in ballots from more than 20,000 voters it claims are not US citizens, one day before the midterm elections. The Justice Department wants ballots linked to a Department of Homeland Security list set aside until the voters’ citizenship status is confirmed. California says the list is unreliable and may include thousands of eligible US citizens, while state officials say separating the ballots would be nearly impossible. A federal judge and an appeals court rejected the request; Judge David Carter warned that discounting votes based on unproven allegations would put democracy in danger.
