Virunga National Park: Another Birth Brings the Bageni Mountain Gorilla Family to 62

Virunga National Park announced on October 27 the birth of a female mountain gorilla in the Bageni family, born to 11-year-old Uweko. It is Uweko’s first documented birth and the family’s fifth birth since January 2026, bringing its total to 62 and making it the largest mountain gorilla family monitored in the park. The birth is the 18th recorded this year in the Mikeno sector; a male was born to Ruzuzi the previous week, following the birth of twins in January. ICCN teams continue monitoring and protecting the gorillas despite disruptions caused by armed conflict in eastern DR Congo.

In September 2026, oil-producing states received 236.049 billion naira through the 13% derivation allocation.
