At least 21 dead as small boat sinks off Senegal

A pirogue carrying migrants and refugees capsized on Saturday off the Loumpoul dunes in Senegal’s northwestern Kebemer department. Senegal’s Interior Ministry said at least 21 bodies had been recovered and one person rescued; the death toll was provisional and search operations were continuing. Le Soleil reported that most of the victims came from the Leona and Thieppe districts. The sinking comes amid ongoing attempts by thousands of people to reach Spain’s Canary Islands from West Africa.
