Blue Silks: Nigerian Lawyers Seek Intervention from International Legal Community

Nigerian non-litigation lawyers associated with the Blue Silks rank accuse Supreme Court Chief Registrar Kabir Akanbi of persecution. Akanbi petitioned the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) seeking sanctions over the rank, created as an alternative to the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) title. Nigerian Law Society Executive Secretary Tonye Clinton Jaja alleges that Nigerian Bar Association officials and judicial institutions have subjected the lawyers to harassment and malicious prosecution; a disciplinary hearing against Jaja and 13 other lawyers was secured on October 6, 2026. The lawyers have appealed to international figures and organizations for support, including the Law Society of England and Wales’ Lawyers at Risk Programme, the American Bar Association and the International Bar Association.
