Brazil’s Lula and Bolsonaro debate policy proposals before run-off

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and right-wing rival Flavio Bolsonaro debated in Rio de Janeiro on Friday, two days before the run-off, focusing on the economy, infrastructure and regional development. Lula challenged Bolsonaro’s plan for deep public-spending cuts, while Bolsonaro accused the incumbent of allowing organised crime to expand and failing to address the rising cost of living. The candidates also disputed each other’s experience and ability to represent change. Broadcast by TV Globo, the debate was more diplomatic than their first encounter but still included personal attacks and tense moments.
