CAF: Motsepe opens the checkbook again… to save his own skin?
Patrice Motsepe announced a 33% increase in annual grants to the CAF’s 54 member federations, raising the maximum to $700,000 from $525,000. Since he became CAF president in 2021, the grants have risen by 250%; the six zonal unions will receive $900,000 each, while the African Clubs Association’s allocation will increase to $500,000. The announcement comes amid growing distrust among some football leaders, reported by The Guardian, and controversy over the CAF’s apparent shift back to holding the Africa Cup of Nations every two years. Its timing has prompted questions about the political motives behind the funding increase as some officials reportedly consider a future without Motsepe.
