Starting November 1, 2026, coin series from 1958, 1959, 1971, 1976, and 1985 will no longer have legal tender status in the six CEMAC countries, following a decision made on October 7, 2026, in N'Djamena. These coins can no longer be used for transactions or debt payments, but holders will have a one-year period to exchange them, as announced by the BEAC. This measure accompanies the rollout of new coins introduced in April 2025 in a region facing metal currency shortages.
