Currency: BEAC aims to raise the number of coins per capita in CEMAC from 23 to 30 by 2030

The average number of coins per person in CEMAC rose from 16 before the 2024 coin series was introduced to 23 as of May 31, 2026, an increase of nearly 44%, according to figures presented by BEAC in Yaoundé on October 28. The central bank aims to raise the ratio to 30 coins per person by 2030, a further increase of about 30%. Since the new series was launched on April 2, 2025, 265 million coins have been injected into the subregional economy, said Emmanuel Asafor Cho, BEAC’s first deputy national director for Cameroon. The increased supply of coins has also enabled the withdrawal of older coins, which had remained in circulation for decades partly because of shortages of small change.
