DA MP demands answers over alleged SAPS links to Cape Town taxi industry
As renewed taxi violence in Cape Town has caused deaths and left commuters stranded, DA MP Nicholas Gotsell is calling for an investigation into police officers’ alleged financial interests in the taxi industry. He wants the South African Police Service (SAPS) to account for disciplinary and criminal proceedings instituted against more than 20 officers accused of having such interests. Gotsell also asked whether any officers are linked to the Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) or the Congress of Democratic Taxi Associations (CODETA), the groups at the centre of the current clashes. SAPS and Cape Town law enforcement agencies announced a joint operation on Friday to address the violence.
