First Group of Ebola Contacts to Leave Quarantine on Sunday, MoH Confirms

Kenya’s Ministry of Health says the first group of people quarantined after Ebola exposure can begin returning home on Sunday, October 25, after completing 21 days of monitoring without symptoms. Health Director-General Patrick Amoth said the discharges will be overseen by the Kenya National Public Health Institute, led by Acting Director-General Kamene Kimenye. Kenya has confirmed nine infections, and by October 20 officials had traced and quarantined 134 of 135 identified contacts; no community transmission has been reported. The WHO requires 42 consecutive days without a new confirmed or probable case before an outbreak can be declared over.

At least 111 Rhodes University students in the Eastern Cape were also treated, and political parties are demanding resignations after an investigation found municipal services had not warned residents of the health risk.
