Double murder investigation after Khayelitsha taxi shooting

Two men were shot dead on Tuesday night in the Harare area of Khayelitsha in an attack apparently linked to taxi violence. Police responding at about 9pm on November 3 found one man dead behind the wheel of a white Toyota Quantum minibus, and another man, aged 44, dead nearby on Ngxalanga Street in Zwelitsha. Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Frederick van Wyk said officers had opened two murder investigations and no arrests had been made. The killings came less than a day after taxi associations CODETA and CATA signed a peace deal.

The new offense of “abuse of tribal power” would carry six to twelve months in prison and a fine of ten million Congolese francs. The proposal also defines “cultural identity” as belonging in the private sphere and prohibits promoting it in the workplace.
