DRC: After an Investigation, National Assembly Recommends Sanctions Against Higher Education Minister

On October 26, the DRC National Assembly adopted a recommendation asking the prime minister to sanction Marie Thérèse Sombo, the minister for higher education, scientific research and innovation. The recommendation follows a parliamentary inquiry into the use of academic and related fees at public universities and higher institutes during the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 academic years. The commission, established at the request of MP André Mushongo, found financial irregularities in the management and transfer of student-fee allocations, as well as concerns about funds intended for equipment and infrastructure.
