Ebola: Africa CDC says Nigerian patient was born in Uganda

Africa CDC Director-General Jean Kaseya has urged the woman diagnosed with Ebola Bundibugyo in Nigeria to disclose her full travel history to help identify where she was infected. Born in Uganda, she travelled there with her husband before they returned to Abuja on October 3; investigators are examining whether the infection was acquired in Uganda, the DRC or elsewhere. Nigeria confirmed its first case on October 20, and the patient, a diplomat treated at a private hospital in the Federal Capital Territory, had developed multi-organ failure. Ugandan officials dispute a link to an outbreak in their country, saying she travelled to eastern DRC and became ill only after reaching Nigeria.

WHO warns of ‘more complex’ Ebola outbreak now present in three African countries

The WHO says the Bundibugyo-strain Ebola outbreak, which emerged in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in mid-May, is becoming more complex, with active or recent cases in the DRC, Kenya and Nigeria. Nigeria confirmed its first case on Tuesday in the Ugandan-born wife of a Swiss diplomat based in Abuja, as authorities investigate where she was infected. Uganda said she had travelled to eastern DRC before transiting through Uganda, but the WHO and African health authorities said they had no confirmed information about travel to the DRC; the Swiss government believes she contracted the disease in Uganda. The outbreak has killed more than 4,000 people in the DRC, while Uganda, which had cases earlier this year, has been declared Ebola-free.

Idris tasked public media and the National Orientation Agency with sharing verified information, including prevention messages in Nigerian languages and outreach through community, traditional and religious leaders. He urged Nigerians to remain calm, rely on official sources and avoid spreading unverified claims on social media.
