Ebola in DR Congo: Nurse killed in Tshopo province

A nurse was killed and another health worker seriously injured on Saturday in Bafwasende, Tshopo province, while responding to an Ebola alert, according to the WHO. Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus condemned the attack and called for response teams to be able to work safely. WHO Africa Regional Director Mohamed Yakub Janabi warned that misinformation and fear must not fuel violence. The Health Ministry has reported more than 9,800 cases and over 4,700 deaths since the outbreak began in May.

Nigeria’s health minister, Professor Mohammed Ali Pate, said the country could declare the Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak over on December 7, 2026, if no further confirmed or probable cases are detected. The 42-day countdown began after the imported index patient was medically evacuated to Switzerland on October 26 and must be validated by the NCDC and WHO. Authorities are continuing contact tracing, investigating alerts and strengthening health-facility preparedness. On 26 October 2026, Linfodrome staff carried out an outreach campaign for Pink October from the area around their offices in Marcory Zone 4 to the main Koumassi crossroads in Abidjan. Shopkeepers, restaurant workers, students and passers-by received information in French and Dioula about breast cancer warning signs and the importance of early screening.
