On Thursday, October 22, the first rays of sunlight entered the Temple of Ramses II at Abu Simbel in southern Egypt and illuminated the pharaoh’s face on a statue. Hundreds of visitors, some of whom had spent the night at the site, gathered to witness a phenomenon that occurs twice a year, on October 22 and February 22. According to historical interpretations cited by guides, the dates mark Ramses II’s birthday and accession to the throne. Built in the 13th century BC, the temple is considered a masterpiece of ancient Egypt and was relocated in the 1960s.
