Experts Explain Why Nairobi Is Experiencing Hotter Days Despite Expected El Niño Rains

As the October–December rainy season begins, Nairobi is experiencing unusually hot, sunny days. Weather expert Maithya wa Vilivū forecasts temperatures 0.5°C to 1.5°C above normal through the end of 2026 and into early 2027, with daytime highs of 28°C to 30°C and potentially higher in some areas. Experts say El Niño does not guarantee continuous rain or cooler weather because other systems, including the Indian Ocean Dipole and the Madden-Julian Oscillation, affect where and when rainfall occurs. IGAD’s climate center expects enhanced rainfall across much of the Greater Horn of Africa, while Kenya Met forecasts highs above 35°C in parts of Garissa and Wajir.

It was the fourth reported episode in the area since April, following incidents that included more than 120 people being hospitalised in May. Teachers and parents are calling for a swift investigation and a lasting solution to protect pupils and residents.
