F1: Congo denounces Formula 1 decision to hold a race in Rwanda

Congolese Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner called Formula 1’s plan to hold a Grand Prix in Rwanda “indefensible,” saying it would improve the image of President Paul Kagame. Kagame announced the race on Tuesday alongside F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali and FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem. The Grand Prix is planned for the early 2030s on a circuit to be built at Bugesera, near Kigali; Africa last hosted a race in the series in 1993. Congo, the United States and UN experts accuse Rwanda of supporting M23 rebels in eastern Congo, while Rwanda says its security measures are aimed at threats from armed groups across the border.
