FG targets $7.1bn in sugar investments and 110,000 jobs over 10 years

Nigeria’s federal government plans $7.1 billion in sugar-industry investment over 10 years to produce more than two million tonnes annually, create 110,000 jobs and save $2.1 billion in foreign exchange each year. Coordinated by the National Sugar Development Council (NSDC), the programme proposes 10 integrated sugar estates across eight states, covering 143,478 hectares. The estates could produce 835,000 tonnes of sugar annually, while existing operators are expected to add 1.22 million tonnes. The NSDC is seeking $5 billion in long-term debt and $2.1 billion in equity, and disclosed a $1 billion agreement with China’s Sinomach, though financing arrangements are not yet complete.

Activist calls for gender-responsive budgeting in Akwa Ibom State

Lucy Eyo, a civil society advocate in Akwa Ibom State, urged the government to address the needs of women, girls and vulnerable groups in its annual budgets. At the launch in Uyo of “Budgets as Policy: Advancing Gender Justice through Fiscal Analysis,” she cited a review of 2023–2025 budgets that found gaps between allocations and actual spending, as well as inadequate funding for gender-based violence services. Eyo said at least 14,200 of the 15,200 out-of-school children at secondary level are girls, and that the 2025 revised budget lacks publicly available gender markers to track who benefits from spending. The project will examine funding for women’s empowerment, education, water, sanitation and hygiene, and healthcare, with findings to be shared with government and civil society stakeholders.

Lualaba: Hundreds of trucks carrying tonnes of copper and cobalt intercepted on several routes around Kolwezi

Security services intercepted several trucks carrying copper and cobalt on routes across Lualaba, including the Samukinda route, and immobilized them at the Musompo trading centre in Kolwezi. The operation aims to combat mining fraud and verify mineral traceability; some cargo was headed to processing centres and other shipments abroad. A delegation from Kinshasa, led by the deputy director general of the DGM and including Lualaba Governor Fifi Masuka Saïni, inspected the vehicles and their owners’ documents. The CEEC laboratory in Musompo also presented its analytical capabilities, which cover up to 92 chemical elements.
