Fighting intensifies between the FARDC and FRN along the Kashebere-Kibati axis in North Kivu

Clashes between the FARDC and rebels of the Front for the Refoundation of the Nation (FRN) have intensified around Kibati in Walikale territory, North Kivu. Heavy and small-arms fire on Thursday caused panic and drove many residents to flee to Kashebere and other nearby communities. The FARDC and their Wazalendo allies remain positioned on the outskirts of Kibati, which is still occupied by the FRN, as fighting focuses on the Kashebere-Kibati axis. Operations over the past three days enabled government forces to retake at least five localities in the Osso-Banyungu sector, but road traffic on the Goma-Walikale route has been suspended for several weeks.

In the Minembwe area of Fizi, clashes spread to several villages following attacks attributed to the FARDC; shelling near Kakenge the previous day killed at least two people. A new front opened at Kasirusiru and Bugulumiza in Kabare, where the FRN is fighting the Wazalendo; observers say the group may be seeking a route through Kalonge and Shabunda toward Maniema Province.

20230 World Cup: Spain should withdraw if it does not host the final, says right-wing opposition

Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of Spain’s People’s Party and the right-wing candidate for prime minister, said Spain should withdraw from hosting the 2030 World Cup if it does not get the final. Spain is co-hosting the tournament with Portugal and Morocco; Madrid is proposing Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu, while Morocco plans a stadium of about 115,000 seats in Benslimane near Casablanca. Feijóo said the final should be played in Spain and confirmed he would advocate withdrawal if Morocco gets to host it. FIFA has said no decision has been made, despite Moroccan federation president Fouzi Lekjaa’s assertion that the match would take place in Morocco.
