Five wards face recounts as IEC processes 197 election objections

South Africa’s Electoral Commission (IEC) has ordered recounts in five wards after receiving 197 objections to the 2026 local government election results. IEC chairperson Mosotho Moepya said on November 7 that 54 objections had been dismissed, eight withdrawn and two upheld; the upheld objections led to the recounts and an additional window for corrections. The wards are in Tshwane, Mangaung, Thaba Chweu and Breede Valley. The final results are scheduled to be declared at 6pm on Sunday, November 8.
