Former world No. 3 Stan Wawrinka ends career with home defeat in Basel

Stan Wawrinka ended his 24-year professional career after losing 7-5, 7-6 (7/2) to Czech player Jiri Lehecka in the first round of the Basel Open. The 41-year-old Swiss, a three-time Grand Slam champion, had announced that the ATP 500 event in his home country would be his final tournament. He won the Australian Open in 2014, the French Open in 2015 and the US Open in 2016, and claimed the Davis Cup and Olympic doubles gold alongside Roger Federer. The home crowd cheered his points, and he received a farewell ceremony in Basel on Monday.
