Govt Begins Review of Protest Laws and Public Order Framework

The Kenyan government has begun a process to review the legal and policy framework governing public demonstrations. The announcement was made by Head of Public Service and Chief of Staff Felix Koskei on June 11, 2026, during a high-level meeting with the Ministry of Interior and other stakeholders. The goal is to strengthen the implementation of Article 37 of the constitution, which guarantees the right to assemble, demonstrate, picket, and present petitions peacefully. The review aims to protect peaceful demonstrators, establish clear standards for police conduct during protests, and isolate criminal elements who may exploit gatherings.
