How Israel is tightening its grip on Palestinian schools in East Jerusalem

Jamal Shalabi, a 66-year-old Palestinian chemistry teacher, has commuted from el-Bireh in the occupied West Bank to teach in East Jerusalem since 1998. He is among 180 teachers whose entry permits are set to be revoked when they expire at the end of the 2026–27 academic year. Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of Spain’s People’s Party and the right-wing candidate for prime minister, said Spain should withdraw from hosting the 2030 World Cup if it does not get the final. Spain is co-hosting the tournament with Portugal and Morocco; Madrid is proposing Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu, while Morocco plans a stadium of about 115,000 seats in Benslimane near Casablanca. Feijóo said the final should be played in Spain and confirmed he would advocate withdrawal if Morocco gets to host it. FIFA has said no decision has been made, despite Moroccan federation president Fouzi Lekjaa’s assertion that the match would take place in Morocco.
