INEC warns political actors against inflammatory statements ahead of 2027 elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Taraba State urged political actors to avoid inflammatory statements and settle grievances through lawful channels ahead of the January 2027 general elections. At a readiness meeting, Resident Electoral Commissioner Sa’ad Umar Idris called on media outlets and civil society groups to verify information, warning that artificial intelligence could help spread misinformation and rumours. INEC is mapping electoral facilities and considering a mock accreditation exercise in November 2026; it also plans to work with the National Union of Road Transport Workers to transport election personnel and materials.
