Israel’s President Isaac Herzog to Name Candidate to Form Government on Sunday

Israeli President Isaac Herzog said he will name a candidate to form the next government on Sunday, following consultations with parties elected to the Knesset. Sixty-seven lawmakers recommended opposition leader Gadi Eisenkot, while 46 backed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Herzog said mutual vetoes between and within political blocs make it difficult to determine who is best placed to assemble a coalition. The October 27 election produced no clear majority: Likud won 27 seats, Eisenkot’s alliance 48, and two parties representing Israel’s Palestinian minority won 19.
