Jesús de Miguel’s death: branded a “murderer,” goalkeeper Jesús Owono leaves Instagram

After a collision during Monday’s match between CD Tenerife and FC Andorra, striker Jesús de Miguel died Tuesday morning at Nuestra Señora de Candelaria hospital. Goalkeeper Jesús Owono was sent off after striking De Miguel in the chest while coming out of his area, and later closed his Instagram account amid a wave of abuse and chants calling him a “murderer.” Radio COPE reported that Owono is deeply affected and wants to contact the player’s family to apologize and offer his support. Spain’s national police have opened a homicide investigation, and Tenerife postponed its matches against Granada and Badajoz.
