Judicial Reform: NBA’s Unheeded Proposal to Restructure the NJC

In April 2024, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) proposed removing the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) as statutory chair of the National Judicial Council (NJC), which disciplines erring judicial officers. It proposed an 18-member council: six judicial officers appointed by the CJN, six lawyers nominated by the NBA’s National Executive Council, and six non-lawyers appointed by the president subject to Senate approval, with the chair rotating among the three groups. The NBA also recommended court administrators handle budgeting, procurement and renovation so heads of court could focus on adjudication and case management. The proposals were considered and approved in modified form at a national justice-sector reform summit, according to its planning committee chairman, Babatunde Ajibade.

Awujale succession: DSS invites Fusengbuwa ruling house leaders

The Department of State Services (DSS) in Ogun State reportedly invited three leaders of the Fusengbuwa ruling house over the sale of expression-of-interest forms to princes seeking the vacant Awujale stool of Ijebuland. Chairman Otunba Abdulateef Owoyemi, deputy chairman Otunba Dokun Ajidagba and vice chairman Professor Fassy Yusuf were reportedly asked to appear at the DSS office in Abeokuta on October 29, 2026. Yusuf confirmed receiving the letter but said he was in Abuja for a Supreme Court matter; Ajidagba also confirmed the invitation and questioned its timing, saying the succession issues were already before the courts. The DSS did not immediately confirm the invitations, amid a dispute following the death of Oba Sikiru Adetona in July 2025.
