Kasaï health workers launch general strike amid spread of mpox

Health workers in Kasaï began a general strike on October 15, demanding better working conditions and payment of overdue salaries and bonuses. They report eight months of unpaid salaries or regular bonuses, 12 months of unpaid supplementary bonuses, and payment difficulties for 826 workers assigned to Sofibanque. The strikers also demand formal status for newly recruited workers, risk allowances for all staff, and the formal employment of workers currently receiving no salary or bonus; they say they will return only after their demands are met. The strike comes as mpox cases are increasing in several health zones across the province.

Hospitalized patients are already feeling the effects of the work stoppage as strikers await possible talks with the government.
